CENTERSPAR
DRILLING WING ATTACH HOLES
When I drilled the wing attach holes, I used the spot face that was called out in the plans.
To keep the bit from getting to hot, I connected a small (1/4 inch, I think) irigation hose to my garden hose.
I then used a couple clamps to hold the 1/4 inch water hose in position so it would keep a very small steady stream of water flowing onto the hole that was being drilled.
Adjust the water so just a trickle is flowing, not splashing all over the place.
Clear the bit often, and check the bit temperature. If you can't keep your hand on it, then it is to hot.
OBVIOUSLY, you need to use extra caution when using an electric drill around the water. If able make or use a Ground Fault outlet or extension cord.
Drilling all 12 holes is an all day job, very boring (nice pun).
I don't have any photos of the actual drilling process,
but you can see how I have the wings clamped to the centerspar, and am using a laser and tape measure to align the wings in relation to each other, not the centerspar.
Once your happy with the alignment, put several globs of bondo across the gap between the centerspar and the wing
(You can see these globs in one of the photos). Although the homemade "clamps" will hold the wing to the centerspar,
the bondo globs will "lock" the wing and centerspar together. Check the globs occationally while drilling to make sure they didn't break.
Cracked or broken bondo globs is a sure sign that something has moved. STOP DRILLING and find out what happened.
